It’s an open secret that by the time New York Fashion Week rolls around, most of the collections on display have already been seen and scrutinized by the army of buyers, fashion directors, and editors who define what you’ll see in stores and magazines the next season. So why bother with a runway show or glitzy presentation? Because it’s impossible to get a real sense of a collection till you see it in context on real, live models — till it’s fully styled out, in other words. (A great soundtrack doesn’t hurt, either.) With this in mind, we’ve asked several of our favorite New York designers to share their fall ’14 styling strategies. Pay attention — these are styling tips that’ll help you put your own wardrobe together, whether it includes pieces from these labels or not.
