Alexander Liang's Must-Haves for Spring

The founder of Kenton magazine tells us about his top picks for the season, where to shop in Toronto, and the most fashionable duo to come out of Canada.

To continue our celebration of Canadian fashion this month, we reached out to one of the country’s best-known bloggers, Alexander Liang of Kenton magazine, to curate a sale of the must-have pieces for spring. Here, he expounds on his favorite picks — as well as the best menswear spot in Toronto, the coolest trend right now, and one thing no man should ever wear.

How would you describe your style?
Rough yet refined — I love mixing a more casual and distressed aesthetic with refined pieces. I really like to be comfortable with what I wear, but at the same time I’m definitely a fan of luxury – and for people who have ever bought anything from a luxury brand, you understand the experience and what that’s like.

What’s something every guy should be wearing this spring to stay ahead of the trends?
Definitely taking inspiration from sport — I think there’s a lot of brands that are doing edgy and modern sport with mesh and jerseys, and there’s also the classic varsity look that’s been around for a couple seasons now. I love mixing sneakers into outfits, like wearing suits with sneakers.

What’s something no man should be wearing right now?
I’m pretty open to everything — I think everyone should do what they want to do, and that everyone’s style is different because everyone’s personality is different. But I will say that you shouldn’t be wearing something that you think is on trend but you don’t feel comfortable in.

Who’s the most well-dressed man in Canadian history?
That’s a good one… I would say that Dean and Dan [Caten, of DSquared2] are very representative of Canadian fashion today on the more global scale, and I think they have an aesthetic that’s pretty clear and that people know.

What is on your shopping list right now?
Everything. [laughs] Right this moment, though, I’m really into finding a great camel coat since it’s still so cold here. For spring, I’m on the hunt for a fresh pair of white jeans to really wear through the season.

What are your favorite Toronto menswear spots?
There’s a brand and store here called Klaxon Howl, and they have a really cool boutique for men. It’s a lot more of a lifestyle situation, where you walk in and have a coffee, and the designer is often there and he’ll go into the details of the clothes with you.

What are your favorite pieces from your curated sale?
Randolph Engineering aviator sunglasses: I have a pair of Randolph Engineering aviators and they’ve been my go-to sunglasses — you can’t go wrong with aviators!

7 For All Mankind Slimmy: White jeans can sometimes seem hard to pull off, but this Slimmy fit is the perfect cut for white denim — it’s slim, but not too skinny, which is exactly what you want your white jeans to be.

Billionaire Boys Club floral jacket: Floral prints are a big trend for men this spring and summer. This jacket is casual and incorporates a cool, dark floral print that makes a statement without being over the top.

Omega De Ville Prestige watch: Classic style, simple yet luxurious. The gold case and light brown leather strap are a beautiful combination for spring.

Eastland Made in Maine moccasin shoes in orange: The orange leather makes for a nice pop of color that’s still muted enough to work with a variety of outfits. They’ll also look fantastic with your white jeans.
