It holds the rare distinction of being the first 007-sanctioned adrenaline rush—back in 1964 when the first James Bond film hit theaters, the impeccably suave spy was behind the wheel of a Ford Mustang, naturally. Fifty years later, the car is being re-released, and a slew of top designers are using the 2015 version as inspiration for a line of exclusive T-shirts, available only on Gilt.
“For more than 50 years, the Mustang has maintained its integrity and design, but it has also sort of evolved,” says New York-based designer Rogan, who captured the car’s speed and silhouette in bold black-and-white graphics. Other designers who teamed up with the automaker include CO|TE, Pamela Love, Paula Cademartori, and Anna Sui.
The Mustang Unleashed collection will be sold exclusively on Gilt and features 15 illustrations inspired by the car’s impressive heritage. The guys behind the wheel may have changed since its appearance in Bond—a little more rugged-looking, maybe—but the message remains the same.
“The Mustang became the true essence of that freedom,” says Sui. “It is a car that makes you dream.”
