Frustrated by the apparel industry’s obsession with trends, Swedish textile designer Anki Spets left fashion in 1990 to found Area — her own bedding and home accessories label. Years later, Spets’ goal remains the same: to create luxurious bedding that reflects Scandinavian design principles such as beauty, simplicity, and practicality. Area’s collection of natural-fiber sheets, baby bedding, blankets, and pillows offers many alternatives to the market’s traditional florals-and-frills offerings — think soft graphic loops, colorful pebbles, and weaving patterns. Looking for a distinctive bedroom suite? Say hello to Bruno: a series of 1960s-inflected beds, nightstands, tables, and benches, available in solid walnut, oak, or ash, that Spets co-designed with Magnus Lindstrom. As Area’s success has grown, Spets has ventured beyond the bedroom with kitchen glassware, rugs, and furniture. In 2010, Area opened its first storefront near Union Square in New York City.
