In 1983, while visiting Italy’s Amalfi coast, Susan, Frances, and Lee Gravely stayed at the San Pietro Hotel in Positano. The inn’s handmade dinnerware captivated them, and so they arranged to meet its makers, who worked at a nearby factory. Inspired by what they saw—and eager to bring the pieces to the States—the trio founded Vietri upon their return home. Today, the North Carolina-based company is the largest U.S. importer and wholesaler of handcrafted Italian items, with its range extending from tableware and flatware to candles and mouth-blown glassware.
