”Savennieres: Brimfire in a bottle … the jewel of these famous vineyards is the Coulée de Serrant, a magnificent steep slope of Chenin Blanc vines that is clearly destined to be one of the world's great vineyards.”
Jancis Robinson, Financial Times
Why to buy: Golden in color, silky in texture, and remarkably complex in taste, this Chenin Blanc draws such breathless prose from writers for a reason. It is unlike—and superior to—any other in the world. Paired with pork chops or skate, a beurre blanc sauce or even grilled sardines, it’s an incredible food wine at an outstanding price.
Characteristics: Chenin Blanc, at its best, is gold in hue, brimming with peaches and nectar, and even featuring notes of brown butter. This particular vintage has ripened beautifully. Expect a bouquet of honey and ginger, with potent yellow fruit and a touch of star fruit. Note that the yellow hue is the way the wine should look, and that if it seems oxidized at first blush, just wait: Cork it and leave it on the counter, or let it aerate for a bit; it will improve markedly. Pair it with any sort of white meat, intense buttery and white sauces, and fish.
