As one of the smallest DOC's of Italy, Lacrima di Morro d'Alba is not only the name of the DOC but also the name of the thin-skinned, highly aromatic and versatile grape of northern Le Marche. The blue velvet color and heady aromatics of violets, dried roses, rhubarb, ginger and white pepper on the nose makes for a titillating pair for veggies, rabbit dishes and salumi.

Why to buy: Venture off the beaten path: this unique varietal is only grown in a little known appellation of the Marche on Italy’s Adriatic coast. In 2009, Wine & Spirits Magazine named this one of their Best Buys.
Nose, palate and pairing: A medium-bodied red with distinctive aromas of roses, dried violets and wild savory herbs, like rosemary and sage. The palate is equally expressive, with bright notes of berries, almonds and roses and a light tannic grip. This wine makes a seamless match for cured meats, roasted vegetable kebabs and cheeses.
The backstory: The Marche region is one of the most exciting wine regions in Italy, and also one of the most undiscovered in America. It is east of, but shares a mountain range with Tuscany and has a long coastline that makes fresh seafood a culinary staple. The combination of fertile land with both mountain and coastal influences makes it a perfect place for growing grapes. Velenosi along with winemaker Attilio Pagli are Marche all-stars, known for crafting some of the best winesin Italy.
