Alphonse Mellot is so passionate. He’s one of the most respected winemakers in all of France. He and his son, Alphonse Jr., are utterly entrenched in their craft.
– Jeffrey Meisel, Gilt Taste Wine Director
Why to buy: Having garnered consistent accolades—Food & Wine calls it “Sancerre at its best,” and Sommelier Journal named it their top Sauvignon Blanc in 2010—this 19th-generation (yes, 19th!) estate is renowned for its classic Sancerre.
Characteristics: A flinty, herbal bouquet followed by notes of lemon, grapefruit and melon on the palate, this wine is less bracing than new world Sauvignon Blanc. Its most obvious companion is seafood: Try it with oysters or a simply prepared fatty fish, like sardines or tuna.
Varietals: 100% Sauvignon Blanc
Appellation: AOC Sancerre, Loire Valley
Brand: Gilt Wine
