Jose Urrutia, the founder of Madrid-based accessories and footwear label La Portegna, is something of a hopeless romantic — at least when it comes to travel. As a child, he used to sit in his family’s attic poring over old travel photo albums. Of course he had some pretty good material on his hands, considering his grandmother took a little jaunt to Africa with a fellow named Ernest Hemingway back in 1933. Urrutia took his own excursion in his youth, traveling solo around the world with nothing but a backpack, but entered the corporate world soon thereafter. All he needed for a reboot was a trip to the Argentine Pampa, and La Portegna was born. The company crafts everything from bags and pouches to travel slippers, but the goal of each is the same: Make sure travel is about the journey itself, not just the destination.
