Puma is the product of a sibling-rivalry moment between brothers Rudolf and Adolf Dassler, who in 1948 resolved an argument by splitting their Bavaria-based shoe factory into two new companies: Puma, founded by Rudolf, and Adidas, established by Adolf. In addition to creating iconic suede basketball shoes, Puma has outfitted elite athletes such as soccer legend Pelé and was the first footwear company to use vulcanized rubber and foam-free midsoles. These days the globally recognized lifestyle megabrand produces sneakers and stylish sweats for men, women, and children as well as underwear, accessories, sports league uniforms, golf gear, chic outerwear, and watches. Puma Black Label is the brand’s collection of luxury lifestyle clothing and shoes created by couture designers such as Alexander McQueen, Mihara Yasuhiro, and Puma creative director Hussein Chalayan. From McQueen’s Velcro high-tops to Chalayan’s outer space-inspired gear, each Black Label piece reinvents classic styles with high-tech fabrics, sleek silhouettes, modern shapes, and — of course — Puma’s signature leaping cat logo.
Just in case Puma’s dizzying array of styles, shapes and colors isn’t varied enough for you, take a look at what such fashion-forward types as Rudolf Dassler and the deceptively spartan Mihara Yasuhiro have done with its Black Label imprint. Choose from canvas, distressed suede or Italian leather – or follow Alexander McQueen’s decadent lead and opt for lizard.
Behold, an entire summer’s worth of theme and variation!
